For humans, basic self-awareness generally occurs at about two-years of age. Apes have a similar ability, demonstrated through the “Mark Test” in the following video.
For managers, self-awareness is critical in order to be an effective leader. Some managers may be able to pass the mark test but are otherwise blind to critical leadership derailers that undermine their own success.
360-degree feedback acts as the paint on your face. Some leaders are surprised when they see the “green mark” on their report. It causes them to pause and compare their self-perceptions to those of their peers, direct reports, and boss. Their feedback becomes a catalyst to change behaviors that influence relationships, work, and their own happiness.
